Description
Robert Hawker was born in 1753 and died in 1827. According to Wikipedia: “It was in the pulpit that ‘the Doctor’ was best known and loved. Thousands flocked to hear the ‘Star of the West’ preach when he was in London. An Evangelical, he preached the Bible and proclaimed the love of God. He was said to have great Biblical knowledge and could preach a good sermon on any passage at a moment’s notice.”
This book is his one-year devotional for the evening. The idea of being “poor” comes from one of Jesus’ beatitudes: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matt. 5:3). As such, he deeply realized his utter need for Christ in everything.
Charles Spurgeon said of Hawker: “There is always such a savor of the Lord Jesus Christ in Dr. Hawker that you cannot read him without profit.” We do well to listen to him and grow in our Christ-centeredness, finding encouragement in Him (even though it contains some old English).
